✨ What I’m Doing

I’m doing a design challenge kinda thing for myself to force myself to diversify and pick up new skills.

I’m challenging myself to do the best I can with the first prompt that pops up on sharpen.design

✨ Process

The first challenge is designing a letterhead for a movie critic. Now, I have a general idea about what a letterhead is, but I need to have a proper understanding to come up with a design. So, I broke it down into 3 simple steps. The first two steps help with the context and the content while the last step deals with the design:

  1. Understand what a letterhead is, and understand its purpose.
  2. Figure out the content to include on the letterhead
  3. Design and Iterate

✨ Letterhead and Its Purpose

A letterhead is a heading at the top of a formal document that is used to professionally identify a company or an individual and is often used for important documents and communication documents.

Although it can be used on any important paper with any general size, it is usually used with letter-sized paper with a size of [8.5" x 11"], [10" x 14"], and [12" x 18"]. A letterhead can either be for a person or a company, so the content and use case depends on the situation. For my use case, the letterhead is for a professional, so I’ll emphasize on that.

The purpose of a letterhead is to make a good first impression that is formal. It also helps to showcase the identity of an individual or a company instantaneously. Additionally, it enables efficient communication by providing the sender’s identity and making contact details readily available.

✨ Content On the Letterhead

As I mentioned earlier, there are different types of letterheads depending on whether it’s for a company or an individual, but there are endless possibilities for a letterhead and it can be customized uniquely for each individual or company.

For an individual, following is the crucial information:

  1. Name of the person
  2. Designation / Profession / Title
  3. Office / Home Address
  4. Phone Number
  5. Email Address

✨ Design

Now that I have an understanding of what a letterhead is, what purpose it serves, and the content to include in the letterhead; I could start with the design. I decided to keep the design quite simple and keep the use of graphics to a minimum.

I set a time limit of 1 day to complete the entire design from learning about letterheads to preparing four variations of the design.

✨ Version 1

The first version is a barebones version with just the text aligned at the centre.

✨ Version 2

The second version adds a film illustration on the left side of the page and aligns the text on the left side.

✨ Version 3

For the third version, I manipulated text vector to form sort of a logo with the S and J, and kept the text aligned to the left.

✨ Version 4

For the final version, the text is aligned to the left, but a black box with the initials is added on the right side of the page which helps in geining attention.

✨ Footnote

Hey there, hope you liked the blog post. This was my first prompt design and I’ll keep on doing more such designs to learn and diversify my skills. I’ll document my learnings and share the process through my blogs.
